Journalism: The Oxygen of Democracy
SS+D is a proud sponsor of the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting – The Oxygen of Democracy Lecture Series.
The popular Journalism: The Oxygen of Democracy series returns to the VOA Museum on Thursday, February 19, 2026, featuring celebrated author Tim Love. Love will discuss his latest book, The Medium is the Mirror: The Reformation Over Truth Reshaping our Relationships, Politics and Sacred Beliefs.
Finding truth in information is one of the most challenging issues facing America and the world today. We no longer live in a media environment dominated by speech alone. It includes systems that shape attention, emotion, and beliefs. Laws written to protect neutral distribution and free speech cannot compete with platforms designed to persuade, reinforce, and condition behavior for profit.
Laws that guided development of the early Internet are incompatible with today’s AI environment. Mr. Love will explain how advancements in neuroscience and technology, known as Neuro-Dystopian systems, have infiltrated mass media through the use of AI. Operating under minimal legal regulation, they reshape public life. Love believes this is not a free speech crisis. It is a governance gap.
